This month marks one year since COVID-19 upended our lives. While we have faced great loss and adversity, there is promise for the future.
The pandemic disparately impacted individuals, families, organizations and industries. Pre-pandemic challenges intensified — ranging from health and income disparities, to workforce availability, child care and workforce housing. Monroe County unemployment claims skyrocketed and later eased but remain higher than before the pandemic. Our local labor force shrank by around 3,100 people between February and December 2020, when it reached roughly 69,000, according to the Indiana Business Research Center.
